Given the cubic function
2x3+px−(3+5i)x+q=0
with roots i,k1,−(1+k),
Find the value of p, q, k. But k∈R.
正 : Comparison of Coefficients
2x3+px−(3+5i)x+q=0
≡2(x−i)(x−k1)(x+(1+k))=0
⟹2[(x2−kx−ix+ki)(x+(k+1))]=0
⟹2[x3+(k+1−k1−i)x2+(−kk+1−i(k+1)+ki)x+kk+1i]=0
⟹2x3+2(k+1−k1−i)x2+2(−kk+1−i(k+1)+ki)x+k2(k+1)i=0
Now comparing coefficients:
p=2(k+1−k1−i)
−3−5i=2(−kk+1−i(k+1)+ki)
q=k2(k+1)i
Using the second equation and by equating Re=Re, Im=Im:
−3=−k2(k+1)
3k=2k+2
k=2
Now substitute into other equations:
p=5−2i
q=3i
AS:Vieta’s Formulas
Vietas formulas of a cubic function states that for a cubic function
ax3+bx2+cx+d=0
with roots α,β,γ, the following relationship can be formed:
α+β+γ=−ab
αβ+αγ+βγ=ac
αβγ=−ad
Using this, we can use the relationship between the roots and the coefficients of the cubic:
i+k1−(k+1)=−2p
2−3−5i=ki−i(k+1)−kk+1
−2q=ki(k+1)
Using the second equation and by equating Re=Re, Im=Im:
Re:k=2
Im:k=2,k=−21
but −21 subbed back to Re is false, so reject, and therefore k=2.
Substituting k=2 into first and third equations:
p=5−2i
q=3i
