Product Rule:
if h(x)=f(x)g(x), then h′(x)=f′(x)g(x)+g′(x)f(x)
Using first principles:
h′(x)=h→0limhf(x+h)g(x+h)−f(x)g(x)
To evaluate f(x+h) and g(x+h), use first principles of f′(x) and g′(x):
f′(x)=h→0limhf(x+h)−f(x)
Then,
f(x+h)=hf′(x)+f(x)
g(x+h)=hg′(x)+g(x)
Hence,
h′(x)=h→0limh[hf′(x)+f(x)][hg′(x)+g(x)]−f(x)g(x)
h′(x)=h→0limhh2f′(x)g′(x)+hf′(x)g(x)+hg′(x)f(x)+f(x)g(x)−f(x)g(x)
h′(x)=h→0limhh(hf′(x)g′(x)+f′(x)g(x)+g′(x)f(x))
h′(x)=h→0limhf′(x)g′(x)+f′(x)g(x)+g′(x)f(x)
h′(x)=f′(x)g(x)+g′(x)f(x)
Quotient Rule:
if h(x)=g(x)f(x), then h′(x)=g2f′(x)g(x)−g′(x)f(x)
h′(x)=h→0limh[g(x+h)f(x+h)−g(x)f(x)]
Using f(x+h) and g(x+h) from first principles:
h′(x)=h→0limh[hg′(x)+g(x)hf′(x)+f(x)−g(x)f(x)]
h′(x)=h→0limh[g(x)[hg′(x)+g(x)]g(x)[hf′(x)+f(x)]−f(x)[hg′(x)+g(x)]]
h′(x)=h→0limh[hg(x)g′(x)+(g(x))2hf′(x)f(x)+f(x)g(x)−hf(x)g′(x)−f(x)g(x)]
h′(x)=h→0limh[hg(x)g′(x)+(g(x))2hf′(x)f(x)−hf(x)g′(x)]
h′(x)=h→0limh[hg(x)g′(x)+(g(x))2]h[f′(x)g(x)−f(x)g′(x)]
h′(x)=h→0limhg(x)g′(x)+(g(x))2f′(x)g(x)−f(x)g′(x)
h′(x)=(g(x))2f′(x)g(x)−g′(x)f(x)
